Restaurant review: Barristers

Camille Allcroft checks out Barristers restaurant within The Courthouse in Knutsford and discovers a menu full of seasonal delights

The imposing grandeur of The Courthouse Knutsford makes an impression as soon as you glimpse the striking building, which has been transformed in to a restaurant, bar and hotel with ten individually designed bedrooms. We went along recently for lunch at Barristers, the restaurant within the iconic building where the kitchen is headed up by Executive Chef Steven Tuke who works with suppliers, farmers and foragers to source premium local produce.

The seasonal menus feature a range of tempting meat, seafood and vegetarian options inspired by traditional recipes and global influences. There is an impressive wine list too, with a sturdy selection of red, white, roséand sparkling to peruse – we ordered a flinty Pinot Grigio, perfect for a sunny afternoon. Original features such as the spectacular domed ceiling and wood panelling highlight the heritage of the space, while custom artwork and floral furnishings bring the ambience up to date.

A generous helping of carrot soup got things underway; velvety and sweet this paired well with a crusty roll, so fresh it was still warm. The cured meat platter proved to be another hit, laden with an array of Parma ham, pastrami, chorizo, olives, pickles, bread and dressed rocket this made a tasty Mediterranean style starter.

On to mains and as we visited on a Sunday, indulging in the Sunday lunch was a must and there is roasted rump of beef and roasted chicken breast to choose from. We opted for the chicken which was tender and juicy, served with crisp butter roasted potatoes, celeriac purée, seasonal vegetables, glazed Chantenay carrots and wilted greens. A huge Yorkshire pudding and rich red wine gravy rounded off this classic meal and the quality of the ingredients shone.

Simple penne pasta was elevated to a flavoursome treat with a tangy roasted tomato sauce, red onion, smoky baked aubergine, chilli and creamy goat’s cheese and lemon mousse which added a zesty tang.

The verdict
Hearty portions, irresistible flavours and excellent produce combine to make Barristers Restaurant an enticing dining destination and we found the attentive service to be another plus. The restaurant will soon see the addition of The Rooftop Gardens, offering all day dining on an alluring outdoor terrace, which will become a stylish champagne and cocktail bar by night.
